Voodoo Beach are a Berlin-based trio whose music balances raw intensity with fragile beauty. Founded around the tight rhythm section of Josephine Oleak (drums) and John-H. Karsten (bass), the band reached its current form in 2020 with the arrival of singer and guitarist Heike Marie Rädeker, formerly of the legendary noise rock group 18th Dye.
Since the 1990s, Rädeker had played bass with 18th Dye, recording an album with Steve Albini and three Peel Sessions. She also sang, though only in English, and never played guitar. Now, her lyrics are in German and her guitar playing mirrors her earlier bass style: percussive, feedback-laced, yet deeply melodic and sensitive.
Their sound draws on post-punk and noise rock, weaving together driving basslines, minimalist drumming, and Rädeker’s distinctive guitar work. German-language lyrics add a stark, poetic dimension, exploring themes of resistance, disorientation, and the search for truth.
On stage, Voodoo Beach are as uncompromising as on record: their songs can collapse into chaos or rise into hypnotic clarity, always demanding full presence. With their debut album Wonderful Life, they have established themselves as one of the most vital and fearless voices in contemporary German guitar music.
